How does the Burmese typing test work?

  1. Choose your layout and duration – Myanmar Unicode or English QWERTY, for 1, 2, 5 or 10 minutes.
  2. Start typing the passage. The timer starts with your first key. Correct mistakes with Backspace – only the errors left in your text count.
  3. Get your result when the time is up or the passage is finished: net WPM, gross WPM, accuracy, correct and wrong words.
  4. Try again or take a new passage. Your last 10 results are shown in the chart, so you can see your progress.

Which Burmese keyboard layout should I learn?

Myanmar Unicode is the standard Burmese layout used on computers and phones where Burmese is written.

How is typing speed measured?

Speed is counted in words per minute (WPM), where one “word” is five characters – the usual rule in typing tests:

  • Gross WPM = (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
  • Net WPM = gross WPM − (errors ÷ minutes) – the number most exams use
  • Accuracy = correct characters ÷ characters typed

In Burmese a character is one Unicode character, so a letter with a vowel sign can count as two – that is why speeds in Indian scripts are usually a little lower than in English for the same skill.

What is a good Burmese typing speed?

As a rough guide: 10–20 WPM is a beginner, 25–35 WPM is a comfortable everyday speed, and 40 WPM or more is fast.

Tips to type Burmese faster

  • Keep your fingers on the home row and use all ten fingers – the lessons show which finger presses each key.
  • Look at the screen, not at your hands. Slow and correct beats fast and wrong.
  • Practise 15–20 minutes every day instead of one long session a week.
  • Take a 1-minute test daily and a longer one each week to see your progress in the chart below.

Burmese Typing Test – Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Burmese typing test free?

Yes. It is free, with no sign-up and no limit on the number of tests. Your last 10 results are kept for this browser.

How is WPM calculated?

Gross WPM is the characters you typed divided by 5, divided by the minutes. Net WPM subtracts your errors per minute from that. Accuracy is the share of characters you typed correctly.

Can I correct my mistakes during the test?

Yes. Use Backspace to correct a mistake. Only the errors left in your text at the end are counted.

How long is the test?

You can choose 1, 2, 5 or 10 minutes. Many exams last 10 minutes or longer, so practise with the longer tests before an exam.

Is this the same as a government typing exam?

It works the same way – a passage, a timer and net WPM – but every exam has its own rules for duration, layout and how errors are counted. Always check the official notice of your exam.
