How to Join Consonants and Vowels to Make Burmese Words
Burmese is written from left to right with round letters. Every consonant has a built-in "a"; vowel signs and medials – small signs for y, r, w and h – attach to it. In Unicode the consonant always comes first, even for ေ, which is drawn before it.
Three rules to remember
- Consonant + vowel sign: က + ာ = ကာ (kā) – press u m.
- Sign written before: က + ေ = ကေ (kei) – type the consonant first – press u a.
- Medial: မ + ြ = မြ (mya) – as in မြန်မာ (Myanmar) – press r j.

About the Burmese Language
Burmese (မြန်မာဘာသာ) is a Tibeto-Burman language of the Sino-Tibetan family and the official language of Myanmar. It is tonal, with three main tones. Burmese is written in the Myanmar script, which developed from the Mon script and ultimately from Brahmi; its letters are round because they were traditionally scratched onto palm leaves, which straight lines would split. The same script is used for Shan, Karen, Mon and other languages of Myanmar.
