How does the Pashto typing tutor work?
- Choose your layout in the settings above, or English QWERTY.
- Learn with lessons. Each lesson adds a few keys, from the home row to the top and bottom rows, Shift letters, common words and full sentences. The on-screen keyboard shows which key to press next.
- Reach 90% accuracy to unlock the next lesson. Accuracy matters more than speed at first.
- Take a speed test. Type a real Pashto passage for 1, 2, 5 or 10 minutes and get your speed and accuracy on the Pashto typing test.
Which Pashto keyboard layout should I learn?
Phonetic is a phonetic layout: each letter sits on the English key that sounds like it, so it is quick to learn if you already know the English keyboard.
How is typing speed measured?
Speed is counted in words per minute (WPM), where one “word” is five characters – the usual rule in typing tests:
- Gross WPM = (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
- Net WPM = gross WPM − (errors ÷ minutes) – the number most exams use
- Accuracy = correct characters ÷ characters typed
In Pashto a character is one Unicode character, so a letter with a vowel sign can count as two – that is why speeds in Indian scripts are usually a little lower than in English for the same skill.
What is a good Pashto typing speed?
As a rough guide: 10–20 WPM is a beginner, 25–35 WPM is a comfortable everyday speed, and 40 WPM or more is fast.
Tips to type Pashto faster
- Keep your fingers on the home row and use all ten fingers – the lessons show which finger presses each key.
- Look at the screen, not at your hands. Slow and correct beats fast and wrong.
- Practise 15–20 minutes every day instead of one long session a week.
- Take a 1-minute test daily and a longer one each week to see your progress in the chart below.
Pashto Typing Tutor – Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Pashto typing tutor free? Do I need an account?
It is free and needs no account. Your lesson progress and your last 10 results are kept for this browser with an anonymous cookie – if you clear your cookies, the history starts again.
How is WPM calculated?
Gross WPM is the characters you typed divided by 5, divided by the minutes. Net WPM subtracts your errors per minute from that. Accuracy is the share of characters you typed correctly.
How long is the speed test?
You can choose 1, 2, 5 or 10 minutes. Many exams last 10 minutes or longer, so practise with the longer tests before an exam.
When does the next lesson unlock?
When you finish a lesson with at least 90% accuracy. Repeat a lesson as often as you like.
Which layout should I choose for Pashto?
Phonetic is the layout used for Pashto here, and English QWERTY is available too.
