How does the Tamil typing tutor work?

  1. Choose your layout in the settings above, or English QWERTY.
  2. Learn with lessons. Each lesson adds a few keys, from the home row to the top and bottom rows, Shift letters, common words and full sentences. The on-screen keyboard shows which key to press next.
  3. Reach 90% accuracy to unlock the next lesson. Accuracy matters more than speed at first.
  4. Take a speed test. Type a real Tamil passage for 1, 2, 5 or 10 minutes and get your speed and accuracy on the Tamil typing test.

Which Tamil keyboard layout should I learn?

Inscript is the Government of India standard for Indian scripts. Vowels sit on the left half of the keyboard and consonants on the right, and the key positions are the same for every Indian script, so once you know it you can type the others too.

How is typing speed measured?

Speed is counted in words per minute (WPM), where one “word” is five characters – the usual rule in typing tests:

  • Gross WPM = (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
  • Net WPM = gross WPM − (errors ÷ minutes) – the number most exams use
  • Accuracy = correct characters ÷ characters typed

In Tamil a character is one Unicode character, so a letter with a vowel sign can count as two – that is why speeds in Indian scripts are usually a little lower than in English for the same skill.

What is a good Tamil typing speed?

As a rough guide: 10–20 WPM is a beginner, 25–35 WPM is a comfortable everyday speed, and 40 WPM or more is fast. Government typing tests in India – such as the SSC skill test and state, court and clerk typist exams – ask for a minimum net speed, usually somewhere between 25 and 40 WPM depending on the exam and the language. Always check the speed, duration and allowed layout in the official notice of your exam.

Tips to type Tamil faster

  • Keep your fingers on the home row and use all ten fingers – the lessons show which finger presses each key.
  • Look at the screen, not at your hands. Slow and correct beats fast and wrong.
  • Practise 15–20 minutes every day instead of one long session a week.
  • Take a 1-minute test daily and a longer one each week to see your progress in the chart below.

Tamil Typing Tutor – Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Tamil typing tutor free? Do I need an account?

It is free and needs no account. Your lesson progress and your last 10 results are kept for this browser with an anonymous cookie – if you clear your cookies, the history starts again.

How is WPM calculated?

Gross WPM is the characters you typed divided by 5, divided by the minutes. Net WPM subtracts your errors per minute from that. Accuracy is the share of characters you typed correctly.

How long is the speed test?

You can choose 1, 2, 5 or 10 minutes. Many exams last 10 minutes or longer, so practise with the longer tests before an exam.

When does the next lesson unlock?

When you finish a lesson with at least 90% accuracy. Repeat a lesson as often as you like.

Which layout should I choose for Tamil?

Inscript is the layout used for Tamil here, and English QWERTY is available too.
