How to Type Hindi in WhatsApp on Android and iPhone
To type Hindi in WhatsApp, add Hindi to your phone keyboard: in Gboard on Android go to Settings → Languages → Add keyboard → Hindi, and on iPhone go to Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard → Hindi. Then switch keyboards with the globe key and type Hindi directly or in English letters.
Android (Gboard)
- Open any chat, tap the gear icon on the keyboard (or open the Gboard app) → Languages → Add keyboard.
- Choose Hindi. Pick the layout: the transliteration option lets you type in English letters and get Hindi words; the हिन्दी layout shows Hindi letters on the keys.
- In WhatsApp, press and hold the space bar or tap the globe key to switch to Hindi.
Gboard also has a microphone: tap it and speak Hindi to type by voice.
iPhone
- Open Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard… and choose Hindi.
- Select Transliteration (type in English letters) and/or Devanagari (Hindi letters on the keys).
- In WhatsApp, tap the globe key to switch keyboards.

Frequently asked questions
Why do my Hindi messages show as boxes for my friend?
Their phone has no Hindi font, which is rare on phones made in the last ten years. Updating the phone usually fixes it.
Can I type Hinglish and send Hindi?
Yes. The transliteration keyboards on Android and iPhone turn English-letter words into Hindi as you type.
