How to Join Consonants and Vowels to Make Marathi Words
Marathi is written in syllables. Every consonant already contains a short "a" sound, so क is read ka. To write a different vowel after a consonant, you add a vowel sign called a matra (मात्रा). To join two consonants without a vowel between them, you use the halant (्), which turns the first letter into a half letter.
Three rules to remember
- Consonant + matra: क + ा = का (kā) – press k e.
- Type in the order you speak: the matra ि is written before the letter but typed after it – कि (ki) – press k f.
- Consonant + halant + consonant: क् + ष = क्ष – press k d Shift+,.

About the Marathi Language
Marathi (मराठी) is an Indo-Aryan language of the Indo-European family and the official language of Maharashtra. It is written in the Devanagari script – the same script as Hindi – in the style called Balbodh, and it has a few letters and sounds of its own, such as ळ (ḷa). Marathi is phonetic, usually puts the verb at the end of the sentence (मी पाणी पितो – "I water drink") and has three grammatical genders. Its rich literature runs from the saint-poets Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram to modern writers, and in 2024 the Government of India recognised Marathi as a classical language.
