About the English Language
English is a West Germanic language of the Indo-European family – a distant cousin of Hindi and Sanskrit. It began in England and spread around the world with trade, the British Empire and, later, science, business and the internet. In India English is an associate official language of the Union, used alongside Hindi, and the main language of higher education, the courts and much of business. English is written in the 26-letter Latin alphabet; its spelling is famously irregular, because it kept old spellings while the pronunciation changed.
